Dielectric Resonator oscillators have to a large extent replaced Cavity Oscillators; these units are smaller in size and have comparable phase noise. The dielectric resonator itself is made of ceramic material that has very low loss at microwave frequencies and is extremely stable over a wide temperature range; it is called a "puck" because of it's shape. The practical frequency range is from 2 GHz to 21 GHz, however, units have been built to 35 GHz. The resonator is glued or screwed down to reduce modulation side bands during vibration and shock.

Mechanical tuning is standard on most units and the tuning range can very from a zero type adjustment of several megacycles to hundreds of megacycles.

The units can also be voltage tuned over moderate tuning ranges to allow for phase locking or FM modulation applications.
